Project: “Investigation of groundwater resources in the remote areas of Nam Bo – Phase III”.

The Project has been implemented by the Division for Water Resources Planning and Investigation for the South of Vietnam since 2006. The task has been to investigate on groundwater resources in 30 areas of the remote communities and the areas nearby the borders belonging to the provinces of Đồng Nai, Bình Phước, Tây Ninh, Long An, Tiền Giang, Đồng Tháp, Bạc Liêu and Kiên Giang;

Until June 2010, 26 boreholes drilled for hydro-geological investigation of groundwater have been constructed and handed over to the local authorities, military units, frontier posts and stations for exploitation, supplying clean water for the people living in the remote and frontier areas and soldiers who are in charge of protecting the South-Wesern boder. (location of each well are found in table 2), total discharge which has been handed over was 13.400m3/day, the number of people who are supplied with clean water for daily use is 223.330. All the wells reached and over the expected extraction rates. The water meets the standards of chemical components, trace elements and micro-organs for drinking and other domestic purposes.

All the wells constructed in phase III have been handed over to the localities and military units living in remote and frontier areas for drinking and domestic. Thank to these production wells, the people’s lives are stabilized; the local authorities and military units have sent gratitude letter to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Department of Geology and Minerals, Vietnam, Center for Water Resources Planning and Investigation, Division for Hydro-geology and geo-engineering for the South (now the Division for Water Resources Planning and Investigation for the South of Vietnam)

Project: “Investigtion and assessment of groundwater for the areas of extremely scarce in drinking water in the provinces of Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan”.

The project was implemented by the Central Division for Water Resources Planning and Investigation from 2007 to June 2010:

            Completed activities: collection of data; carrying out geological and hydro-geological surveys and geophysics. The constructions were finished in 9/21 areas with 34/80 wells (in accordance with the approved projects), most of the wells were drilled at the expected depth and were in correct positions. 20/34 wells were constructed with the discharge of > 0,28 l/s (reaching 58,8%), of which 12 wells have the discharge of >1,0 l/s; 8 wells with the discharge from 0,28 to 1l/s. Extraction equipments were installed. 10 constructions were handed over to the localities for managment; 4 boreholes located in Tân Nghĩa commune, Hàm Tân distrcit, Bình Thuận province have been handed over to the Center for Clean Water and Rural Environmental Hygience of Binh Thuan province. At present, 6 constructions have not yet been installed with extraction equipments and not yet handed over t the localities for management.

            Actual pumping rates of the constructed wells are as follows:

            Ninh Thuận Province:

            - In Ma Nới area, Ninh Sơn District: 4/4 wells meeting the extraction rate with the total actual pumping rate of 21,48 l/s, equal to 1856 m3/day (the preservation rate setforth in the Project was 144m3/day);

            - In Hòa Sơn area, Ninh Sơn District: 2/4 wells meeting the extraction rate with the total actual pumping rate of 2,4 l/s, equal to 207 m3/day (the preservation rate setforth in the Project was 144m3/day);

            - In Phước Tân area, Bắc Ái District: 1/3 wells meeting the extraction rate with the total actual pumping rate of 0,8 l/s, equal to 70 m3/day (the preservation rate setforth in the Project was 96 m3/day);

            - In Phước Trung area, Bắc Ái District: 3/4 wells meeting the extraction rate with the total actual pumping rate of 1,0 l/s, equal to 86,2 m3/day (the preservation rate setforth in the Project was 128 m3/day);

            - In Phước Thành area, Bắc Ái District: 4/4 wells do not meet the extraction rate (<0,28 l/s).

            Bình Thuận Province:

            - In Sông Bình area, Bắc Bình distrcit: 3/4 wells meeting the extraction rate with the total actual pumping rate of 3,05 l/s, equal to 263 m3/day (the preservation rate setforth in the Project was 128 m3/day), particularly the well SB3 is currently suppying water to the teachers and pupils of the Sông Bình, Cầu Vượt branch (see picture).

            - In Sông Phan area, Hàm Tân distrcit: 2/5 wells meeting the extraction rate with the total actual pumping rate of 1,07 l/s, equal to 92 m3/day (the preservation rate setforth in the Project was 144 m3/day).

            - In Tân Nghĩa area, Hàm Tân district: 4/4 wells meeting the extraction rate with the total actual pumping rate of 4,83 l/s, equal to 417 m3/day (the preservation rate setforth in the Project was 144 m3/day).

            - In Vĩnh Tân area, Tuy Phong distrcit: 2/3 wells meeting the extraction rate with the total actual pumping rate of 3,4 l/s, equal to 293 m3/day (the preservation rate setforth in the Project was 96 m3/day)

Project: “Investigation of groundwater resources in the mountainous area of Central Region and - phase III”.

The Project is implemented by the Central Division for Hydro-geology and Geo-engineering (now Central Division for Water Resources Planning and Investigation) from 2002 to 2008. Groundwater was found and could be exploited and supplied to the people living in 15 areas of water scarcity in the mountainous areas of Central Region and Tay Nguyen. 59 wells have been constructed, of which 55 contained water and were handed-over to the localities for management, exploitation and utilizaion with the total actual pumping rate of 94,83l/s (8.193m3/day), capable to supply water to 140.000 people (60l/day), details of each province are as follows:

- Kon Tum Province (Ia Chim area): 4/4 wells containing water with the actual pumping rate of 864m3/, supplying water to about 14.400 people; 4 wells and 4 electrical pumps were handed- over to localities for management, exploitation and utilization;

- Gia Lai Province (Ia Kreng and Đăk Tơ Ver areas): 9/9 wells containing water with the actual pumping rate of 1.366m3/day, supplying water to 22.766 people; 9 wells, 8 electrical pumps and 1 natuaral flowing wells were handed over to the localities for management, exploitation and utilization;

- Đăk Lăk Province (Ea Rok area): 4/4 wells containing water with the actual pumping rate of 694m3/day, supplying water to 11.566 people; 3 wells and 3 electrical pumps were handed over to the localities for management, exploitation and utilization;

- Đăk Nông Province (Gia Nghĩa area): 3/3 wells containing water with the actual pumping rate of 162m3/day, supplying water to 2.700 people; 3 wells and 1 electrical pumps were handed over to the localities for management, exploitation and utilization;

- Lâm Đồng Province (Lộc Nga and Đinh Trang Hoà areas): 6/6 wells containing water with the actual pumping rate of 1.313m3/day, supplying water to 21.883 people; 6 wells were handed over to the localities for management, exploitation and utilization;

- Bình Thuận Province (Mương Mán and Măng Tố areas): 10/12 wells containing water with the actual pumping rate of 855m3/day, supplying water to 14.250 people; 6 wells, 5 electrical pumps and 1 manual pump were handed over to the localities for management, exploitation and utilization;

- Khánh Hòa Province (Cầu River area): 3/3 wells containing water with the actual pumping rate of 247m3/day, supplying water to 4.116 people; 3 wells and 2 electrical pumps were handed over to the localities for management, exploitation and utilization;

- Phú Yên Province (Xuân Quang area): 3/3 wells containing water with the actual pumping rate of 101m3/day, supplying water to 1.683 people; 1 well and 1 electrical pump were handed over to the localities for management, exploitation and utilization;

- Bình Định Province (Tây Thuận area): 3/5 wells containing water with the actual pumping rate of 299m3/day, supplying water to 4.983 people; 3 wells and 3 electrical pumps were handed over to localities for management, exploitation and utilization;

- Quảng Ngãi Province (Bình Thạnh): 2/4 wells containing fresh water with the actual pumping rate of 547m3/day, supplying water to 9.116 people; 2 wells and 2 electrical pumps were handed over to the localities for management, exploitation and utilization;

- Quảng Nam Province (Duy Tân area): 3/3 wells containing water with the actual pumping rate of 864m3/day, supplying water to 14.400 people; 3 wells and 3 electrical pumps were handed over to the localities for management, exploitation and utilization;

- Đà Nẵng city (Hòa Phước area): 3/3 wells containing water with the actual pumping rate of 882m3/day, supplying water to 14.700people; 3 wells were handed over to the localities for management.

Project: “Investigation and assessment of groundwater in the mid-land and mountainous areas of Bac Bo”

Objectives:

- Assessment on the potential and capacity to meet the demand of groundwater in accordance with the requirements of social economic development and national security until 2010, which will be the background for the planning, appropriate exploitation and protection of groundwater in the mid-land and mountainous areas of Bac Bo;

- Combination with the supply of drinking water for several points/ areas which are urgently in need of water in the mid-land and mountainous areas of Bac Bo;

Implemented by: 3 Divisions for Water Resources Planning and Investigation of the North, the Centre and the South and the Sub-center for Water Resources Consultancy and Services from 2006 to 2009;

Completed activities: collection of data; analysis and processing of remote sensing pictures; general investigation and survey; investigation and collection of data on current status of water exploitation and utilization, discharging of waste water into the water sources (groundwater, surface water and waste water), carrying out hydrological survey and drawing, geodesics, geophysics etc.

Investigation and survey and drawing of hydrogeological map at the scale of 1:50.000 for 57 investigated areas of 8 provinces (Cao Bằng, Nghệ An, Bắc Kạn, Hà Giang, Lạng Sơn, Thanh Hoá, Thái Nguyên, Bắc Giang) covering an area of 2.977km2, 85/111 constructed wells (76,6%) has the discharge of 0,5l/s, total discharge of 267,1l/s equal to 23.076m3/day. The water quality of all the wells meets the requirements. The wells are checked, accepted and handed-over by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) to the localities for management, exploitation and utilization, details are as follows:

- Hà Giang Province: in 11 areas, 14/16 wells having the discharge over 0,5l/s, making up the total of 47,3l/s equal to 4.090m3/day;

- Lạng Sơn Province: in 4 areas, 5/8 wells having the discharge over 0,5l/s, making up the total of 8,9l/s equal to 772m3/day;

- Cao Bằng Province: in 8 areas, 13/15 wells having the discharge over 0,5l/s, making up the total of 37,4l/s equal to 3.228m3/day;

- Bắc Kạn Province: in 5 areas, 12/13 wells having the discharge over 0,5l/s, making up the total of 36,3l/s equal to 3.136m3/day;

- Thái Nguyên Province: in 8 areas, 4/18 wells having the discharge over 0,5l/s, making up the total of 46,8l/s equal to 4.048m3/day;

- Bắc Giang Province: in 5 areas, 6/10 wells having the discharge over 0,5l/s, making up the total of 19,5l/s equal to 1.685m3/day;

- Thanh Hoá Province: in 8 areas, 10/16 wells having the discharge over 0,5l/s, making up the total of 36,4l/s equal to 3.148m3/day;

- Nghệ An Province: in 8 areas, 11/15 wells having the discharge over 0,5l/s, making up the total of 34,4l/s equal to 2.969m3/day.

Component 3 of the Project: “Investigation, assessment, planning and using of surface water and land in the coastal line; potential of groundwater in the coastal areas and islands”.

The Project was implemented by the three Divisions for Water Resources Planning and Investigation of the North, South and the Centre. The completed activities are: collecting data, analysis of remote sensing pictures, drawing hydro-geological map of 1:200.000 (5.945km2) and 1:50.000 (3.167km2); investigating and assessing on current status of groundwater exploitation; geophysical measurement, drilling, pumping tests, sampling and analysis of water samples.

Constructions are completed in 10 areas (including 3 islands), water was found in 36/38 wells. All of the wells are handed-over to the localities for management, exploitation and utilization

Project: “Investigation and assessment of groundwater in Neogene aquifer of Ha noi city”.

Objectives:

- Definition of geological and hydro-geological features of Neogene Aquifer;

- Assessment on the amount of water, zoning potential areas of the aquifer in the studied area;

The Project has been carried out by the Division for Water Resources Planning and Investigation for the North of Vietnam since 2007. 6/13 wells have been constructed so far. Details are as follows: LK1-N with the depth of 155m, at Đông Ngạc Commune, Từ Liêm District, Hà Nội, discharge of 16,44(l/s); LK3-N with the depth of 40m, at Long Biên district, Hà Nội, discharge of 16,40(l/s); LK6-N with the depth of 230m, at Ngũ Hiệp Commune, Thanh Trì district, Hà Nội, discharge of 5,50(l/s); LK8-N with the depth of 220m, at Lệ Chi Commune, Bắc Ninh, discharge of 20,06(l/s). The water quality is good. It is a potential aquifer that can supply water for industrial purposes in the studied area;

Regarding the well LK2N-TH with the depth of 300m, at Tả Thanh Oai, Hà Nội, salty water was found;

The well LK4-N, at Việt Hưng Urban Area, Long Biên District, Hà Nội is under construction.
